An International Student’s Guide To Fighting Homesickness

Living abroad for the first time in your life can be very exciting. It can also be very overwhelming at times. However, there are a number of things you can do in order to fight homesickness and make the most of your experience. Try out these tips to help you ease out of feelings of homesickness.

Living in another country, dealing with a new language and culture can be overwhelming. If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out and talk to someone you trust. You may even reach out to counselors on your campus, or another international student that is going through a similar experience. Talking about shared experiences can help ease the difficult of what you are going through, at least you’ll know that you are not alone.

Make sure you are prepared for when homesickness strikes. Make sure you have a way of calling home when you are feeling overwhelmed and need to get in touch with your parents or good friends. Bring photos and other things that remind you of home. If your favorite brown boots remind you of your hometown, bring them along for good luck on your new journey. The important thing is to bring items that will give you comfort while you are away from your familiar environment.

Make sure to stay active. Studying abroad is your time to challenge yourself academically as well as involve yourself in a new culture. Fill up your time studying, volunteering, and making new friends. When you are busy you will have little time for being homesick.

Be patient! Learning a new language and getting used to a new culture can be hard, remember to stay patient. You may even find that funny-looking men’s watches will become appealing to you over time. It is just a matter of getting through the transition period. Start-up conversations with your roommate, and other people apart of your campus community. This will help you pick up the language and culture.

Get involved in your campus. Even though you may find comfort with students from similar backgrounds, do not forget to mingle with other students. The college experience is full of opportunity to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. Do not limit yourself to what you know best.

You no longer have your parents reminding you to get enough sleep, food or exercise, so make sure you are doing these things yourself. Incorporate a healthy balance of all of these things in your life. Enjoy some of your old hobbies. If you are interested in designing special men wedding bands, do this when you have spare time. However, do not forget to try the new experiences that are awaiting you in your host country.

What Makes a Good Student?

Would you consider yourself to be a good student? What characteristics are required to be a good student? I am sure that we have all come across people who have rather annoyed us during our academic life, people who were disruptive, loud, rude and basically annoying. These people are what I classify as bad students and should have been kicked out the lessons until they learned how to behave. What about a good student; is it all about their ability to learn or do they need to possess other qualities?

Before I continue I have to admit that I am no longer a student. I am now a fully fledged worker; working in the fields of stuttering therapy and DVD replication; I also work on a project which offers help on becoming a foster carer.

These are the types of people that I believe make a good student:

1. Co-operative. A top student will co-operate with the lecturer and will be more than happy to help their fellow students to improve. They will be described as being a pleasure to have in the class.

2. Hard working. A good student will be hard working, they will try to get the most of each lesson that they attend.

3. Positive. A top student will have a positive attitude and will convey this to the other students.

4. Attentive. A good student will listen to what the lecturer and his fellow class mates are saying, rather than talking at the same time, which is the majority of students seem to do these days.

5. Fun. A top student will brighten up the class as they will be fully aware when it is the right time to have a little bit of fun. Those who only spend their time working are not seen as rather boring people.

The above are just a few examples of what I believe are the characteristics of a good student. So I will ask the questions again, would you consider yourself to be a top student?
