Sexist Toys? (Part 2)
So continuing the discussion on whether children’s toys are twisting their minds into vile sexist pigs is the big debate on whether it is okay for a boy to play with Barbie and a girl to play with an Action Man.
Well it would seem that people are far more accepting to see a little girl destroying her toys with a toy tank than they are to come into a room and see a boy playing dress up with a princess. But why is this?
The parents have a big involvement on the opinion of all of this, many dad’s would not mind walking in on their daughter playing with a tank but if their son was playing a with a doll they would start to worry a bit. There are so many parents out there that do not want their sons to turn out to be gay which is stupid in itself, playing with a Barbie doll doesnt change a thing.
A lot of this is based around girls not being able to play with all of the toys that boys have but in actual fact it would seem that the complete opposite is happening. So this time it would seem that the media actually has it right because they are targeting the right audience with the right products.
There is no such thing as a sexist or a racist toy, the golliwog was taken out of proportion to be a racist toy. The toy is released and the reaction that it gets is from the public. If they choose to believe it is sexist or racist then that is their choice but personally I do not feel that when a company is designing one of those Christmas toys that they actually set out to make it sexist in any way at all. It is you the consumer that must really decide this one.
